TV battle royal

I was reading the IMDB message board for the show Tyrant to try and gauge other people’s reaction to the season (and possibly series) finale last week. While I was on there I saw a post were someone asked everyone to rank the Fx series.  I was kind of surprised by just how many excellent shows are part of the Fx stable.  I guess when most of these series are only 10 or 12 episodes long per season, then it’s easy to forget how many of them exist on one network.

I looked over the list that had been supplied and realized that it was a pretty damn good line up and most of the rankings I would make would just be splitting hairs.  Granted some of the shows I never got into, or just fell off, so those could be ranked lower. The rest of the rankings were just a mater of personal preference and kind of came down to what genre you would like more. Honestly how do you compare a show like American Horror Story to a show like Tyrant?

That gave me an idea to do a battle royal with all the flag ship tv shows on most of the networks, or at least the ones I am familiar with.  This means a lot of the CBS, Fox, ABC, etc… shows aren’t going to make my brackets because I don’t watch them, and most sitcoms in general are pretty indistinguishable from each other.  There may also be some good shows, that I just haven’t watched yet because of my very very busy important schedule.

this is the first google image search result for tv battle royal. I have no idea.

I’ve decided to have 4 brackets because, well that’s how brackets work.

Fantasy-Sc-Fi

  • Game of Thrones
  • The Leftovers
  • American Horror Story
  • The Walking Dead
  • Extant
  • Orphan Black
  • Arrow
  • Marvel Agents of Shield

Political/War/Drama

  • 24
  • Homeland
  • Tyrant
  • The Americans
  • House of Cards
  • Mad Men
  • Halt and Catch Fire
  • Hell on Wheels

Misc (Comedy-Fantasy-Weird)

  • Louie
  • The League
  • Archer
  • South Park
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  • Last week tonight
  • Community
  • Wilfred

Crime

  • Ray Donovan
  • The Bridge
  • The Killing
  • True Detective
  • Fargo
  • Justified
  • Sons of Anarchy
  • Boardwalk Empire

There are plenty of shows that are probably worthy of being in here like Master of Sex, or Shameless, or Orange is the new Black, but I haven’t gotten around to watching any episodes of those shows.   In fact some of the shows I included I kind of already gave up on like Extant, but I kept them in there just so I could have an even number of teams in each division.

I could break out the match up between all 8 teams in each division, but that will take too long so lets just eliminate the bottom 4 from each division first.

Fantasy-Sc-Fi

  • Game of Thrones
  • The Leftovers
  • American Horror Story – Good but weird in a good way usually, but like most horror movies there’s no real drama or impact on the viewer like in some other shows
  • The Walking Dead
  • Extant – I tried to get into this but it just didn’t click for me despite Halle Berry being being Halle Berry
  • Orphan Black
  • Arrow – Got better in the second year but it still suffers from the forced romance teen drama all CW shows have i’m assuming
  • Marvel Agents of Shield – I have to like this show, but man it could be so much better if it was on something other than ABC

Political/War/Drama

  • 24
  • Homeland – suffered the same problems 24 had during its first run on tv where it gets difficult to tell the same type of story but make it different.
  • Tyrant – maybe with time this show will turn great, but it’s not there yet
  • The Americans
  • House of Cards
  • Mad Men
  • Halt and Catch Fire – I love this show but understand why not every one can get into the random tech geek stuff of it
  • Hell on Wheels – Good show, nothing amazing but steadily keeps building steam

Misc (Comedy-Fantasy-Weird)

  • Louie
  • The League – love the show but it is kind of just Seinfeld with sports
  • Archer
  • South Park – Unfair to get eliminated but its longevity kind of hurts it in this competition
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  • Last week tonight – great, but too new and too similar to colbert and daily show
  • Community
  • Wilfred – kind of lost track last season

Crime

  • Ray Donovan – It’s good but the there is weird pacing issues with some of the plots for some of the characters
  • The Bridge – Good show but has yet to have any really profound moments
  • The Killing – need to catch up on the final season, this might be the toughest category to make it out of the first round.
  • True Detective
  • Fargo
  • Justified
  • Sons of Anarchy – Great show the first couple of years but man it’s hard to watch sometimes now
  • Boardwalk Empire

With the first two rounds out of the way lets see how the sweet 16 match ups play out.

Fantasy-Sc-Fi

  • Game of Thrones vs. The Leftovers
  • The Walking Dead vs. Orphan Black

Game of thrones takes down The Leftovers based on sustained excellence and the fact that the best episodes of The Leftovers don’t touch Game of Thrones. Walking Dead narrowly beats Orphan Black mainly because it has more bad ass action, and I kind of lost track of Orphan Black at the end of this current Season.  In the regional Final Game of Thrones takes down The Walking Dead mainly because the acting and dramatic scenes in GOT are superior than the Walking Dead.  Name a scene in the walking bad as bad ass as the Mountain vs. the Viper or as well acted as Peter Dinklege in his court room speech.

Political/War/Drama

  • 24 vs.The Americans
  • House of Cards vs. Mad Men

The American take out 24 since, 24 is fun but it’s been a long time since it was great and gave any real surprises.  House of cards vs. mad men is a tough matchup but i’ll give it to Mad Men because as good as HoC is, the art and heart of Mad Men (think Burt Cooper saying goodbye to Don this half season) is probably better than what House of Cards does at its best.  In the final Mad Men trounces The Americans but only because it has such a longer history behind it than the two year old show.

Misc (Comedy-Fantasy-Weird)

  • Louie vs.Archer
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia vs. Community

I probably should pick louie since I have a huge man crush on the dude and his episodes are often about so much more than just making jokes and making you laugh, but at the same time a lot of that hurts it since in this category I really am looking for something that makes me laugh and doesn’t have somewhat disappointing episodes without almost any jokes like Louie sometimes has. Archer will narrowly squeek by this matchup and will face off against Community which is a shade less funny that It’s always, but does such an amazing job balancing the moments of heart and moments of innovation and geekyness. I know it seems paradoxical since thats kind of what hurt louie, but in my mind it makes sense.  It also in my mind make sense that Community wins over Archer even though I had almost considered Community as one of the shows to not make it out of the first round of cuts.

Crime

  • True Detective vs. Fargo
  • Justified vs.Boardwalk Empire

Fargo was fantastic this year and having it go up against another mini series type show (even though it didn’t submit itself for that category in the emmys) is kind of perfect.  True detective has to win out just for being a little better in everything except for maybe dark humor… maybe (woody harrelson was great wasn’t he).  Justified is a fun fun great show that I thoroughly enjoy but I have to give the win to Boardwalk empire since it has a greater cast of characters and the threat of characters dying, which drives a lot of the rooting and interest in a show for my opinion, is greater as well.  I hate to say this, but everything that Raylene Givens is as far as a quick shooting bad ass in Justified is eclipsed by Richard Harrow and his story line is more compelling and tragic.

The winner between True Detective and Boardwalk empire could go Boardwalks way if I put just slightly more stock in the length of the show and the totality of the series, but I’m goign to give it to True Detective since the story telling style was more unique, acting is slightly better, the boobs pretty damn great, and the single season was so gripping and all consuming.

The semi finals will feature Community going up against mad men. A battle of the Alison Brie Characters would probably have Annie Eddison come out on top (grrroowwwlll) but the battle of the shows have Mad Men come out the victor.

maaaaakkkeeeee OOuuuuutttttt

Not a lot of analysis is needed for that match up, but the semi final between GoT and True Detective is another animal.  I should do a lot of explaining but lets just say that several seasons of awesomness and surprising shocking moments is better than just one season of the same even it is maybe slightly better.

The match up is set for the finals.

Mad Men vs. Game of Thrones.

and the winner is….

……

Game of Thrones.  Here is my rationale, Game of thrones has bewbs on full display and Mad Men doesn’t. Which is a shame because, god i love alison Brie.
